Bloodhound Education STEM Ambassador

Purpose

The purpose of the Bloodhound Education STEM Ambassador role is to help the Bloodhound Education team run workshops and inspiration days in schools, colleges and universities.

Background

Bloodhound Education was established as a charity in 2016 (separate from the BLOODHOUND SSC project):

to advance education for the public benefit in science, technology, engineering and mathematics at all levels in primary, secondary and higher education.

The charity achieves its aims through the provision of inspiration days and workshops related to the curriculum and the provision of a range of free education resources.

Although inspired by Bloodhound, the charity is entirely independent from Bloodhound LSR and its new owners, Grafton LSR.

What we ask of you and what you can expect from us

Bloodhound Education STEM Ambassadors play a vital role in supporting the work of the Bloodhound Education. We already know that you’re passionate about Bloodhound LSR. In order to be an effective Bloodhound Education STEM Ambassador, you’ll also be passionate about inspiring the next generation of scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians through bringing the project to life and contextualising what things mean so that they can be understood by your audience.

As a Bloodhound Education STEM Ambassador, you can expect:

• An up-to-date brief on the progress of the Bloodhound LSR project
• Parking and travel expenses to workshops / inspiration days you support, and lunch whilst there
• An online induction to introduce you to Bloodhound Education, recognise your existing knowledge and identify any training you may need from us in order to fulfil the role
• Guidance and support to run events independently
• An ambassador newsletter, annual conference and an exclusive top

In return, we ask that you:

• Support at least three events each year
• Arrive on time (or let the Bloodhound Education team member know ASAP if there’s a problem)
• Are smartly dressed in your Bloodhound Education kit
• Keep your knowledge up-to-date by engaging with updates or training
• Let us know details of Bloodhound activities you undertake independently to support us in evidencing the outreach of our work
• Use social media appropriately, and do not give media interviews on our behalf

Times and places

Most workshops and inspiration days are delivered Monday – Friday during school terms within schools, colleges and occasionally universities. Occasionally they may be held at a public event or space.Ambassadors living within 30 miles of the delivery location will usually be approached first.

The day typically starts with set up around 8:00am and ends by 4:30pm, but times vary.

Tasks and responsibilities

As a Bloodhound Education STEM Ambassador, you are expected to:

• Give clear guidance / instructions to participants to maximise their learning and engagement
• Give clear guidance to supporting adults (such as teachers and parents) always encouraging them to let the students work things out themselves where possible to maximise learning
• Supervise the use of equipment to ensure safety at all times
• Help deliver presentations about Bloodhound Education and Bloodhound LSR to engage students and promote STEM careers
• Assist in the setting up and packing away of equipment, including rocket car tracks, K’Nex launchers and hot wire cutters, to ensure that the activities run smoothly
• Help to run rocket cars, observing appropriate precautions to ensure safety and enjoyment
• Follow instructions from the Bloodhound Education team lead for the workshop / inspiration day to ensure activities are both engaging and safe

Skills and attributes

A Bloodhound STEM Ambassador should have:

• A clear understanding of the purpose of Bloodhound Education
• A passion for inspiring the next generation of scientists, technologists, engineers & mathematicians
• Knowledge of the history of BLOODHOUND SSC project and of its successor, Bloodhound LSR
• Knowledge of the land speed record, what it entails and its history
• An understanding of the breadth of STEM careers
• Excellent presentation skills

STEM Learning registration and DBS checks

Workshops and inspiration days typically take place in schools. For this reason, all Bloodhound Education STEM Ambassador must be registered via STEM Learning and have a current DBS check. If you are not currently a registered STEM Ambassador, we ask that you complete this step first.
