An introduction to 3D printing

What is 3D printing?

3D printing uses a printer to create three-dimensional objects, for example a bike, a phone case, a face shield or a house. Objects are created by adding layers of material. Materials may be plastic, metal or even chocolate.

Here is a great way of practically learning about Additive Manufacturing (adding layers) and having a lot of fun too racing your car..

You will need:

• Scissors
• Glue Stick
• A4 Foam or cardboard from a small delivery box
• Car template
• a balloon
• a barbeque skewer
• a straw
• Instruction PowerPoint for step by step guide, videos and other free resource links.

Key Learning Outcomes:

You will:

• be able to gain an understanding of the science and process of printing components using a 3D Printer
• understand how components are developed using CAD or laser scanners and then 3D Printed
• be able to create their own 3D object (out of foam) following the Additive Manufacture principle
• See the environmental benefits of 3D printing
