Gloucestershire Summer 2023 Family Workshops

Holiday Activities and Food Programme

We are proud to be a part of the Holiday Activity and Food Programme (HAF) funded by the Department of Education.

Our HAF workshops are for CHILDREN 5+ YEARS. Children 9 years and under must be accompanied by a parent or carer. Under 5’s welcome as part of a family group.

We are running workshops at 6 different locations:

  1. Berkeley – Bloodhound Education Centre, GL13 9FB (more details here)
    • Tue 1st Aug: Hi-speed rocket cars
    • Tue 8th Aug: Hi-speed rocket cars
    • Thu 10th Aug: Mission to Mars & Engineering super structures
    • Tue 15th Aug: Exploring aerodynamics & Catapult engineering
  2. Cirencester – Watermoor Primary School, GL7 1SY
  3. Lydney – Lydney Community Centre, GL15 5AT (more details here)
    • Thu: 27th July: Air Powered Rockets Workshop
  4. Coleford – The Main Place, GL16 8RH (more details here)
    • Fri: 28th July: Hi-speed rocket cars
  5. Gloucester – King’s School, GL1 2BG (more details here)
    • Wed 2nd Aug: Hi-speed rocket cars
    • Wed 9th Aug: Speed and parachures
    • Wed 16th Aug: Mission to Mars
    • Wed 23rd Aug: Engineering super structures
  6. Tetbury – Dolphin’s Centre, GL8 8DS (more details here)
    • Fri 28th July: Air Powered Rockets Workshop

Rockets and Parachutes: Design and launch a rocket to see how far it will travel. The Bloodhound Car uses a parachute as one of its mechanisms to slow down safely. You will explore the science of air resistance through making and testing different types of parachutes and see the factors that affect drag.

Air Powered Rockets Workshop: Learn about the jet engine and rocket technology in the Bloodhound 1,000mph Car. Design and build your own rocket car and race it to see the results.

Exploring Strong Structures: Learn about structural engineering through exploring the growth of tall buildings and their structures. Create and design your own towers and then test them to destruction.

Hi-speed rocket cars (new): Design and shape your own rocket car from a Styrofoam block, using specialist tools to make it aerodynamic. The cars will be launched using CO2 propulsion to see how far and fast they travel.

Mission to Mars: Back by popular demand, explore the science behind rockets. Design and launch your own compressed water rocket which you will blast off from our outside launch pad. The current record is 30 metres!

Engineering super structures (new): Civil engineers help design and build bridges and towers. In this session you will learn about strong shapes and structures before building a tetrahedron pyramid up to 2 metres tall.

Exploring aerodynamics (new): The Wright Brothers first flight was 120 years ago. Humans have long been fascinated by flight. Design and build a glider, see how shape affects flight path, and how far it will fly.

Catapult engineering (new): Explore the physics behind catapults, their design and how they operate. Build your own working catapult and see the results.

Lunch is provided free for all children and adults attending.
