The Bloodhound Education team had an amazing time at the WorldSkills UK Live 2019 show at Birmingham’s NEC in late November. Their stand, complete with revamped modular car, attracted huge numbers of students from among the 72,000 visitors at the skills, careers and apprenticeships event.
Building on Bloodhound LSR’s success
The show took place in the week following Bloodhound’s successful final run during high speed testing in South Africa, during which the car reached a speed of 628mph. A video of that run was set up to show on a loop on one of the video screens on the stand, which proved very popular.
“Having the car actually achieve these high speeds is making all the difference in the world to our mission to inspire students,” said Rob Bennett, chief inspirer at Bloodhound Education. “It’s a real project achieving its promise. In addition, the accuracy of the modelling data is fantastic.”
The Bloodhound Education stand featured the refurbished modular interactive show car in its new red livery, with new video and interactive touchscreen content. Also on show were: engineering items such as a nose cone, a rib and the rocket model; the Bloodhound Driving Experience; the VR Experience; and the K’Nex Challenge.
Making a real difference
“There was a huge amount of goodwill towards the project at the show,” added Rob. “There were students there who have followed the project since they were at primary school and are still excited about it.”
As proof of the success of the project and the educational outreach programme, one visitor to the stand was a young man who was inspired by Bloodhound to become an engineer.
“I visited his school around five years ago,” explained Rob. “He told me that visit changed his life, as he now works at BAE Systems where he’s on the apprenticeship scheme.
“This is why Bloodhound is so important – we need more engineers in the UK and Bloodhound Education, along with the success of the car, are directly helping to make that happen.”
